Click Fraud 101: How To Protect Yourself From Click Fraud
Last issue we discussed click fraud and who gets hurt by it. Remember, click fraud is the illegitimate clicking on an advertiser’s pay-per-click (PPC) ad campaign. Click fraud is perpetrated by either of two types of entities: 1) a competitor hoping to increase his competitor’s ad spending or 2) a website that displays a search engines PPC ads that share revenue with the search engines.
Let’s quickly review last month’s issue. We discussed three entities that are hurt the most by click fraud; the search engine marketer, the customer and the search engines. The search engine marketers are those companies who advertise using PPCs on the earch engines, like Google and Yahoo!, as marketing tools. Often times, these marketers see their cost rise and their return on investment fall dramatically, due to click fraud.
The customers can be hurt by click fraud as well. Business owners often turn to pay-per-click campaigns (PPC) to get their product or service on top of search results. When the business owner is affected by click fraud, often times they can no longer afford the PPC. This may cause fewer relevant search results to appear for the potential customer.
Search engines are also directly affected by click fraud. The majority of a search engine’s income is generated by PPC. When click fraud affects their customers, the customers are forced to quit their PPCs and the search engine loses revenue.
Do Your Research
Like any other business decision you might make, you have to research the PPC program before you sign up. It’s important to know where your sponsored listing, or ads, might show. If you find that the ads will show on sites that you feel are irrelevant to your product, you may want to look else where. However, most programs allow you to include your ads from certain affiliates, which is a great option. Getting your ads on sites that you feel are best for your product or service is important. It can help protect you from click fraud, as well as help increase sales and your return on investment.
Use Click Fraud Detection Technology Options
There are many things you can do to help protect yourself from click fraud and if you’re not using all of them, you may get hurt. You can purchase services that track your traffic and include things like IP addresses, clicks, search terms used, search engines and page visits. This type of service is key to identifying and stopping potential click fraud.
Other services you can purchase track clicks and predict potential click fraud. These types of services are usually upgrades to the standard click traffic web tool. These tools will help you avoid looking through your website’s logs.
It is also widely suggested that you set up an email alert with this type of service to notify you when potential click behavior is happening based on the parameters you set. By monitoring this, you can help stop click fraud by reporting it.
It’s a good idea to do your research into such services and implement one into your click fraud monitoring.
Know Your Average Site Visitor
Understanding your site visitors is important. Legitimate customers tend to show a trend in their behavior. Whether it’s how deep into your site they go or how long they stay on your site, a trend usually develops. There are many venders that offer services that allow you to easily track this sort of behavior, one of which is HitsLink. By monitoring such behavior, you can establish a certain type of behavior that your customers follow. If you ever see any activity that doesn’t follow this typical behavior, there is a higher probability that it’s click fraud.
Like we have discussed in previous newsletters, some things to look for are: lower than normal conversion rates, repeat visitors that don’t stay on your site long, visitors at odd hours of the night and visitors that come from other countries.
Conclusion
The only way to protect yourself from any wrongdoing is to be aware and use every defensive measures that are reasonably available to you. Click fraud is no different. By monitoring the activity on your site you help lower or eliminate the possibility of you becoming a victim of click fraud.
This concludes our discussion on click fraud. Check next month's newsletter for an all new subject.
