Links 101: Placement Of A Link Within A Site
(The last in a series related to SEO and the value of links)

Last month we touched on types of links and link acquisition strategies, and the many ways links can help you gain PageRank. This month’s topic will cover placement of links within a website. Proper placement and usage of internal links can be beneficial when it comes to PageRank and which sites Google deems important. The placement of links as well as the quality of links plays a role in Google’s decision of importance. Links on the header or footer of a webpage often do not get the same value as those placed inside the body text. Links in the body generally are cross links or links that point to sites that have additional information on the topic.

Cross Linking

Cross linking is when a webpage has links pointing to other pages within the same site. Basically, every website has a hierarchy of web pages. The home page may link to two pages, and those two pages link to four more pages, and so on. Cross linking is linking more than just this hierarchy; it’s linking all of the sites together, crossing over horizontally on the hierarchy.

To get a high PageRank, it takes more than just having thousands of pages. These pages have to get into Google’s index in order to show up on the search results page. For this to happen, the pages must contain good content for Google to deem them worthy to be listed in their index. Try and keep these links in the body text and not in other areas.

Placing ‘Swapped Links’

Many websites rely on link swapping, a link acquisition strategy where websites put each other’s link on their website. An example of this is website A putting a link on one of its web pages pointing to website B and website B putting a link on one of its web pages pointing to website A. This is a way to gain links on a site. It is important to understand that link placement plays a role in determining how much Google might value a link. However, link swapping may not be as valuable as other forms of link acquisition.

If you decide to swap links, we suggest that you do not create a webpage solely for swapped links. A common example of this is a site having a page that says ‘recommended links’ or ‘suggested links.’ Google can easily recognize this and doesn’t give value to those links or gives very little link value. Google rewards websites for working hard and writing good content, and may not reward websites that have a lot of swapped links.

Also, websites tend to put ‘recommended links’ within their URL. That is a red flag for Google. An example of this is www.screentekinc.com/recommendedlinks/. We suggest you avoid doing this, also avoid swapping a mass amount of links. In addition, never put links on a frame-based webpage. Google is unable to crawl these links and you will not be awarded value for them. Avoid frame-based websites in general – they are often less user-friendly and are always impossible for spiders to crawl. The same goes for java script links. Spiders can’t read these links, thus you lose any potential link value. Links are important to gaining higher PageRank, but don’t put too many on one page. Limit your page to 100 links.

Conclusion

Gaining a high PageRank is hard. The road is rough and long. But, the end result, though it may be years away, is very rewarding. Link placement might sound like a low priority, but it’s not. It is a much easier strategy to raise your PageRank when you consider the other things you have to do. Using cross linking within your site is easy and not as time consuming as other strategies.

If you go the swapped link route, play it safe and don’t put them all on the same page marked ‘recommended links.’ Furthermore, try to intertwine them into your text. Avoid java script and frame-based websites with links on them. If you go through the trouble of obtaining links or cross linking, at least make sure you will get credit for them. By following these suggestions, you’ll be on the right track to a higher PageRank.
