See What Our Customers are Saying

"“[W]e were most pleased with the service and speed with which you processed the order.

A little background if you are interested. We are an IT company and we repair computers, but never laptops. We took this one over to a local agency for repair and they were…so unaccommodating that we decided to look around and see if we could come up with a good outlet for parts. That’s how we found you.

It ended up being a very simple fix, our customer saved about $300 and we have a new income opportunity.

Thanks again we will be in touch anytime we have parts needs. "

Links 101: How PageRank Is Calculated
(Third in a series related to SEO and the value of links)

Last month we touched on webpage link value or PageRank, which is Google’s methodology for determining the webpage link value of a webpage. For our discussion purposes we will discuss Google’s PageRank methodology as a proxy for explaining how webpage link value is calculated for other search engines due to the availability of information and the importance of Google.

Getting Started

To determine the PageRank of a website, you must download and install the Google Toolbar. You can do so by visiting http://toolbar.google.com. Once the toolbar is installed, there will be a small bar graph at the top of the browser window showing the PageRank. If you hold your mouse over the PageRank icon, it will show a number between one and ten. This is the website’s PageRank.

How To Calculate PageRank

Along with most of Google’s mysteries, the PageRank displayed is just a proxy for the actual PageRank. The number that is shown on the toolbar is just a whole number representation of a webpage’s actual page rank. If your website is given a PageRank of 4, the actual PageRank might be in the range of 126-625, for example. A PageRank of 5 might actually be between 626-15,625. As you can see, the difference between 126 and 625 is smaller than the difference between 626 and 15,625, which means that it becomes increasingly difficult to raise your displayed PageRank. But, what do all these numbers mean?

There is a complicated calculation that Google uses to determine PageRank, but for our purposes, we are going to break it down to a rather simple formula. Before Google was an actual search engine, it was just a university project authored by the creators of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Their formula to calculate PageRank was published in their Stanford graduate thesis paper. Surely the formula has changed since, but it gives us a good idea how Google calculates PageRank today.

A webpage’s PageRank is calculated approximately every four to six weeks after a website has been crawled and included in Google’s index.Google assigns every web page with the same base number. It then crawls all the websites of the Internet in its index to determine the number of both inbound and outbound links of every webpage. Google then calculates the PageRank being “given” by each webpage and then the PageRank being received by each webpage. It is irrelevant whether these links are pointing to other web pages within the same website or a webpage of a different website.

Google first calculates the PageRank “given” by every webpage in its index. When a link passes or "gives" webpage link value, it does not reduce the PageRank of the "giving" webpage. To do this, Google takes the base number that is assigned to every webpage by Google and then divides this base number by all the outbound links on that webpage. So obviously the more outbound links on a webpage, the less PageRank being “given” by each outbound link.

Google then calculates the PageRank being received by every webpage in its index. To do this, Google sums the PageRank of every inbound link pointing to the webpage. To put it another way, Google takes PageRank it calculated for every outbound link mentioned above and sums these values that correspond to the inbound links pointing to a webpage.

One can see that this process is circular since the web pages receiving inbound links also have links pointing out to other pages. So, Google goes through an iterative process to recalculate PageRank for each webpage. Each recalculation increases the PageRank of a website, but by less and less until the incremental increase is approximately zero. Because this is a circular process, Google includes a factor in its formula called a dampening factor so that the calculation is not calculated an infinite number of times.

In our next issue, we will discuss why search engines value links.

Future Link Topics:what are the benefits of links, types of links and link acquisition strategies.
