Click Fraud 101: What is it, who commits it and what types are there?
To begin, let's first touch on the basics of click fraud. Some people aren't even aware that click fraud exsists or the damage it may cause.
What is Click Fraud?
Click fraud refers to illegitimate clicks on a pay-per-click (PPC) ad campaign. Click fraud causes the cost of an advertiser’s campaign to rise with no increase of revenue. Search engines like Google and Yahoo make the majority of their revenue from their PPC programs (i.e. AdWords, Overture).
Who Commits Click Fraud?
Click fraud is generally commited by two different groups. One form of click fraud is generated from a rival who clicks on ads to drive up advertising cost of their competitors. If you have ads and your competitors click on them, your daily budget will be used up, or your ad spending will increase. For Google AdWords, when an advertiser’s daily budget is reached, the search engine ceases to show their ads, potentially missing legitimate clicks and sales. There are some more sophisticated click fraud methods that competitors might use, but it’s not only competitors using them.
Other perpetrators of click fraud are people just looking to make a buck. Programs like Google AdSense reward advertisers that display Google ads on their sites. When the ad is clicked, the site owner gets a percentage of the cost of the click. This has resulted in the owners of these sites having someone click these ads to increase the amount they or someone else will make from the search engine. Of the two types of perpetrators commiting click fraud, it is commonly viewed that the overwhelming majority are the latter - those making money from the Google AdSense and Yahoo Network programs.
In some cases, what appears to be click fraud may simply be customers doing comparison shopping, thus clicking an ad more than once. Therefore, care must be taken to ensure which clicks are coming from valid, curious potential customers, and which are not.
What Types Of Click Fraud Exist?
As we discussed above, click fraud in its simplest form is either rival competitors clicking on ads to increase advertising cost and depleting one’s budget, or people clicking on PPC ads listed on their own sites to increase their revenue from search engines. These two types of click fraud can be called “manual click fraud”.
Some more sophisticated click fraud comes with the “automated” type. Automated click fraud is often referred to as “bots.” Bots, in this case, are programs which automate illegitimate clicks on PPC ads and then hide their tracks to avoid detection, like a criminal does a crime scene. On a larger scale, these bots can infiltrate home computers via hackers and network them together to create “botnets.” These botnets drive coordinated attacks on PPC ads, driving up advertisers’ costs.
The scary thing about botnets, although they only make up small amount of click fraud at this time, is that they are more likely to look like legitimate clicks. This is because the clicks are coming from the bot-infected home computers in random locations, in terms of networking and of geography and therefore come from multiple IP addresses.
Conclusion
Although click fraud is a huge and widespread problem in the world of pay-per-click advertising, the search engines like Google and Yahoo say they have implemented means to protect their customers. The search engines realize click fraud in the long-term is a threat to their business model. Nonetheless, we feel there are three problems with respect to the search engines' combating of click fraud: 1) Although the search engines say they are attepting to combat click fraud, at the same time they seem to have complacency toward this issue becuase they are making so much money. 2) Because of the "arms race" or "cops and robbers" game between the search engines and the fraudsters, the search engines claim they cannot divulge their methods for combating click fraud. So essentially, we must take their word that they are doing their best to protect us from click fraud. 3) Advertisers don't have control of which websites their ads show up on. This often leads to ads showing up on sites that have nothing to do with the products advertisers are trying to sell.
