Click Fraud 101

Click Fraud 101: What to look Look forFor

Last month we discussed what click fraud is, who commits it and what types of click fraud exists. Remember that click fraud can come from different sources, so keeping an eye out for suspicious click activity is key in preventing click fraud.

To recap, click fraud is the illegitimate clicking on an advertisers pay-per-click ad campaign. Click fraud is perpetrated by either of two types of entities: 1) a competitor hoping to increase his competitions ad spend or 2) a website that displays a search engines PPC ads that share revenue with the search engines. The later are affiliate sites and their goal is to increase clicks on advertisers PPC ads on their sites to increase their revenue. It is commonly felt that the latter affiliate sites are committing the majority of click fraud.

Click fraud causes the cost of an advertiser’s campaign to rise with no commiserate increase in the advertiser’s revenue. Furthermore, Search engines like Google and Yahoo make the majority of their revenue from their PPC programs (i.e. AdWords, Overture).

Repeat Visitors From The Same IP Address

There are various metrics to evaluate to assist you in determining if you are the victim of click fraud. One of The the easiest ways to detect possible click fraud is to look for repeat clicks from the same IP address. While repeat clicks from the same IP address, of course this doesn’t do not always indicate click fraud, it’s a good place to start looking.

Internet users that have AOL or SBC as their Internet service providers, often share the some same IP address. This means that what may appear as repeat clicks from the same IP address may in fact be clicks from different visitors that happen to have the same AOL IP address. Therefore, some of the clicks from the same IP address are legitimate. However, it is still a good idea to look at your click tracking software or server logs to determine whether or not the clicks are legitimate.

Also, keep in mind competitive shoppers looking for a good deal may come and go two or three times from your site a few times in the same day, ; obviously these are legitimate.

However, one way to help you determine if a repeat visitor with the same IP address is committing click fraud is to also determine the keyword phrase being used. If a repeat visitor from the same IP address is clicking many times (in excess of 4 times) and using the same keyword phrase this will help to justify your case to the search engines.

Establish Conversion Rates

If you don’t already track conversions, it may be a good idea to start doing so. Conversion rate is the number of sales transactions derived from your Internet traffic divided by the number of visits to your site. For example, track how many clicks and sales transactions you get for a period of time like a week.it normally takes to generate a sale and store the dataKeep track of this over time. Once you begin routinely tracking conversions, you will begin to notice some what of a trend, or a conversion rate that your product or service hovers around. It is important to establish this historic benchmark so that you can more easily determine click fraud when you see visits spike and sales transactions remain the same.

Any erratic decline in your conversion rate might indicate that your clicks are drastically rising while your sales are remaining the same. This may or may not be click fraud, but it should at least raise some red flags for you to investigate the matter to determine the problem.

To effectively track conversion rate there are two things to keep in mind. First, you need to make sure you are tracking sales that derive from the Internet and not some other advertising campaign. The best way to do this is to use a shopping cart. Secondly, the conversion rate you should be calculating is transactions that derive from your PPC ads specifically divided by the clicks from these PPC ads. This is different than calculating a total Internet conversion rate that includes transactions and clicks from your natural listings..

Page Visits

Keep an eye out for page visits and analyze how many pages within your site the your visitors clicks on. More often than not, legitimate clicks will generate clicks within your site. If a repeated customer only renders one page view every visit, there is a possibility that it’s not a legitimate shopper.

Time Spent On Site

Click behavior that shows many clicks from the same visitor with only a few seconds spent on the pagesite, it may be indicate click fraud. Typical behavior should be compared to the clicks that seem suspicious, and that will help you determine if the click is fraudulent.

Some bots can generate clicks that seem to be legitimate. Catching such click fraud is much more difficult. Also, competitive shoppers may show click fraud behavior, but are actually legitimate.

Conclusion

Although it can be extremely difficult to defend your site from click fraud, looking out for the items listed above will help in battling it. It may be in your best interest to purchase a click tracking program or subscribe to such a service. Doing this will help you easily analyze click behavior and help you protect yourself from click fraud.
