Opinion

Microsoft’s Software Subscription Fiasco

Opinion: Much of this insanity stems from the Google bogey-man. Microsoft imagines Google will implement an online office suite before Microsoft can defend itself, and we'll all be running "G-Word" all the time. What Microsoft should do is actually invest some effort into improving the Office suite.

Consumer Watch: Upgrade That Application--or Else!

More software vendors are forcing users to buy upgrades they don't want. Read the end user license agreement (EULA) before you decide to buy software. If you can't find one beforehand, ask the company for a copy.

After all, you're the customer. Software vendors' sunset policies shouldn't leave you in the dark.

Search Engine Optimization 101

Links 101: How a Search Engine Values a Web Page
(First in a Series Related to SEO and the Value of Links)

To begin, let’s first see how search engines value a web page to determine where it should appear in the search engine rankings. Search engines evaluate three broad areas as it pertains to a web page: the on-page content, the off-page content and Page Rank.

On-page content refers to the keywords found in the body text, headers, title, meta description and alt tags of a web page.

Off-page content or anchor text are the visible keywords "on top" of a link. For example, the link notebook screens points to the hyperlinked URL www.screentekltd.com. "Notebook screens" is the anchor text for the URL and basically indicates the subject of that web page. In fact, a web page may not mention a particular keyword, yet that web page may still appear in the search engine rankings for that keyword just by having web pages with links with the keyword as the anchor text pointing to that particular web page.

Lastly, Page Rank is an important aspect to achieving high search engine rankings. Every web page has a Page Rank or web page value. A portion of the value of a web page’s Page Rank is passed (however, not subtracted from the Page Rank of the pointing web page) on via a link to a web page that it is pointing to. So the Page Rank of a web page is the sum of the all the link value being passed via the many links pointing to it.

Optimization techniques using on-page and off-page content are additive yet diminishing in nature, while Page Rank is a multiplier. Put another away, increasing the number of times that a keyword is mentioned on a webpage improves its ranking, however, each additional time it is mentioned on the web page has less and less value such that there is a point at which any additional usage of the keyword on the page will have no effect on rankings. Page Rank, though, can increase the rankings of a web page beyond the limits of the on-page and off-page optimization techniques. However, Page Rank alone is not enough to lift rankings if the necessary on-page and off-page techniques are not employed effectively.
