Notebooks Pass Desktops In U.S. Retail

Links 101: What is Web Page Link Value?
(Second in a series related to SEO and the value of links)

As mentioned in last month’s series on SEO, search engines evaluate web pages to determine a web page’s ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs) based on three criteria: on-page content, off-page content and web page link value. These next few months we will focus on web page link value specifically and why search engines like to use web page link value to rank pages.

What is Web Page Link Value?

Web Page Link Value or PageRank, which is named after one of Google’s co-founders Larry Page, is one of Google’s methodologies for determining the importance of a web page. Google employs this particular methodology after it has evaluated all the other on-page content (title tags, headers, body text, etc.) and off-page content (anchor text), to adjust its results so that sites that it views as more important will be moved higher up in the search results.

The premise behind PageRank is that if a web page points to another web page, then the pointing web page is saying that the receiving web page is important. This theory applies to both your own internal links (web pages in your web site pointing to other web pages in your web site) and external links (a web page from another domain pointing to one of your web pages). In essence, a link from one web page pointing to another web page is like casting a vote for the receiving web page. Moreover, the more web pages pointing to a web page and the higher the PageRank of the pointing web pages, the higher the PageRank will be for the receiving web page.

This basic theory is still accurate today. However, since the creation of Google with its implementation of PageRank into Google’s algorithm, many webmasters have gone to great lengths to devise strategies to manipulate their own web site’s PageRank. Google continues to tweak its algorithm to prevent manipulation of PageRank to continue to support PageRank as a valid page ranking methodology.
