Click Fraud 101

Click Fraud 101: Part 2 - What To Look For

Last month we discussed what to look for when trying to defend your site against click fraud. Remember, click fraud is the illegitimate clicking on an advertiser’s pay-per-click (PPC) ad campaign. Click fraud is perpetrated by either of two types of entities: 1) a competitor hoping to increase his competitor’s ad spend or 2) a website that displays a search engines PPC ads that share revenue with the search engines. The later are affiliate sites and their goal is to increase clicks on advertisers’ PPC ads on their sites to increase their revenue. It is commonly felt that the latter affiliate sites are committing the majority of click fraud

The strategies that we touched on last month and those we are going to discuss in this issue of the ScreenTek newsletter will help you combat click fraud. To recap from last month, those who use PPC advertising campaigns should look out for: 1) repeat visitors from the same IP address, 2) unusually low one should establish conversion rates to help measure whether clicks aredue to abnormally high clicks, while sales remain the same, 3) depth of visitors’ navigation, analyze page visits and how deep into your site people goand 3) and the amount of time people who clicked on your PPC ad stay on your site. Here is a link to last month’s issue if you would like to read more about the listed strategies.

Clicks At Odd Hours

Judging whether or not clicks at odd hours of the night are fraudulent or not can be difficult, however, you can use this method to your advantage. Many fraudulent clicks are generated from different countries where it may be hard to track the culprits. Clicks from different time zones aren’t always fraudulent, of course, but keeping an eye on small things like time of click can help you catch click fraud before it drains your PPC advertising budget. It is also possible that clicks at unusual times of the night are automated spiders that, which of course, don’t need sleep.

Clicks By Country

Most PPC campaign providers, like Google, allow you to choose which territories your ads will show up in. For those who choose to have their ads show globally, you may be an easier target for click fraud.

Since it is more difficult to track and punish those in different countries for committing click fraud, it is important that website owners keep and eye on the activity from certain domains and countries. Be aware of a high volume of clicks from domains like Romania (.ro) or Singapore (.sg), as these could be fraudulent clicks

Accepting Cookies

Bots are automated entities that can attack your PPC. These bots can infiltrate unsuspecting unprotected PC’s in people’s homes to take control of with the goal of establishing a large network of PC’s to generate more legitimate looking click traffic. These bots then use the various IP address of the infected computers and click on PPC ads. Because of this, the clicks generated by the network of PC’s bot may look legit because they are all coming from different ID addresses.

However, bots often times use browser-less spider technology to visit your site and the spider typically will deny cookies. Site owners should analyze what percent of visitors accept cookies. About 95% of your visitors will accept cookies. Any activity that drops your cookie acceptance rate may be click fraud.

Conclusion

Click fraud is a sneaky, mischievous predator that is difficult to defend against. The items that we suggest you keep an eye out for are the best methods to prevent your site from falling victim to it. It may takes a lot of time and effort to defend your site from click fraud, but if you are successfuled and your time warrants it, the result will may save you even more time - and most important thousands of moneydollars.
