Links 101: Types Of Links And Link Acquisition Strategies
(Forth in a series related to SEO and the value of links)
Last month we touched on how to calculate PageRank, one of Google’s methodologies for assessing the importance of a webpage based on the number and quality of inbound links. This month’s topic discusses the different types of links and strategies to acquire links to improve your website’s PageRank. PageRank is an envaluable way to improve your search term rankings especially for competitive keyword phrases.
Types Of Links
The types of links that point to your website can affect the PageRank and positioning in the ranking of your website for the various search engines. Different types of links are valued higher than others. For instance, reciprocal links, probably the most commonly used method and easily acquired links, are considered the least effective in helping your website gain any PageRank value. A reciprocal link is when two websites swap links, so that each website has a link pointing to the other.
Paid links may not have any affect on your website’s value. Some search engines can detect if you have multiple links pointing to you from a site that offers paid links, thus the search engine will not count these links when calculating a website’s value. In addition, If your website shows a sudden increase of links pointing to it, that is a good indication that you are using paid links, and will not get credit for them.
However, other types of links, especially one-way links can greatly increase your website’s PageRank value. If an authoritative website has a link pointing to yours, then Google sees this as a high quality link, especially if the link is a one way link in the body copy with targeted anchor text. These are called authority links and examples of these may include online technology magazines or content specific blogs.
Directories are also considered a link of high quality if they are credible and long-standing like Dmoz.org or the Yahoo! directory. Having a link on a long-standing, credible website with good related content is one of the best ways to raise your website’s PageRank value. In addition, sites that end in .edu or .gov are considered very credible and are highly valued since these are restricted domain names for use only by authorized entities. Powerful websites that are vast and well known add value to links. The important thing to remember is, just because you score a link on multiple sites, doesn’t mean it will help your website move up the search engine results. You have to pay close attention where you land links, and work hard to get them on sites that search engines deem of high quality.
Link Acquisition Strategies
Search engines are constantly changing their methods of determining high value links. They do this to ensure that links are given proper value. Although you won’t be penalized for bad links, it will most likely not help your PageRank either. Search engines reward websites that have high quality links because it shows that these sites have been deemed credible and have worked hard to have quality links pointing to their site. There are many ways to help get quality links and some are easier than others.
Writing Good Content
One of the best ways to get links is to write good content. Writing good content increases your potential to get links pointing to your website. Any link that basically deems you a reliable source will greatly increase your website’s value. Examples of good content are glossaries, tutorials, informative content, free services or useful online tools. Anything that will make people want to link you to their website. If you give people a reason to link your site, chances are you will gain links.
Blogs and Reviews
Participating in public forums or review forums that offer free advice and support can also be a window of opportunity to gain links. Often times, if you contribute sound information to a forum on a consistent basis, the moderators will allow you to post a link to your website. However, some forums are strict about this and may not allow it. Getting your product or service recognized by bloggers that cover your industry can also lead to quality links pointing to your site.
Directories
You should submit your website to long-standing and credible directories that have many listings. The more listings a directory has, the more people tend to use that directory and point link to it, thus the link value is high. Most well known directories charge you for adding your website to their listings, but this isn’t exactly considered a paid link. Although it is paid for, it is only one link and it is from a credible source. Directories are an easy and efficient way to gain good links.
Paid Links
Paid links may or may not help your PageRank, especially if you have multiple paid links from the same site. This is simply because getting paid links is easy, and like discussed earlier, search engines reward sites that work hard to gain quality links. Although you can’t control all links that point to your site, it is important to pay close attention to those that you can control. By doing so, you can raise your PageRank and thus, show higher on search engine results pages.
Conclusion
Getting good links pointing to your site is essential to the success of your website. The more good links pointing to your website the higher search engines will value your site, thus your website will show higher on the search engine’s results page. We recommend that you keep link acquisition a top priority for your website. Following our suggested strategies will help your website acquire quality links. Writing good content, getting attention from technology magazines or content specific blogs, adding your website to credible directories and getting one paid link per domain name could greatly improve your website’s PageRank.
