Wide LCD Screens Dominate Market
Desktop Monitors Suffer Downturn
The latest desktop monitor shipment and forecast report revealed a drop in the first quarter of 2006. Just two years ago LCD desktop monitors saw a record volume of shipments, but last quarter fell 8.1 percent quarter-over-quarter to 28.9 million units shipped, a report compiled by DisplaySearch said.
Although LCD screens overall penetration rates of LCD monitors remain strong at 74.7 percent for all desktop monitors in the first quarter of 2006, the fall in larger sizes was unexpected. For example, the 17" screens dropped 13.5 percent quarter-over-quarter, DisplaySearch reported.
While LCD panel production climbed in the quarter, inventories also continued to build. Although some manufacturers have called for a slow-down in production, some manufacturers claim the downturn is seasonal. These manufacturers believe the demand will return in the third quarter due to new and wider sizes, the report said.
Though the market for LCD monitor shipments dropped in the first quarter of 2006, the market is definitely moving toward larger and wider displays. The first quarter of 2006 saw a quarter-over-quarter increase of 60.9 percent in shipments of wide desktop LCD monitors.
Growth was especially strong in the middle-size wide screens, including 19"- 21" wide screens. The 22" wide screen is due to hit the market in coming quarters.
Companies like Dell and Samsung remained the world-wide leader of wide desktop displays shipped in the first quarter of 2006. Dell is at the top of the market, showing a 19 percent share of the market in the first quarter of 2006. While Samsung was the only company to display quarter-over-quarter growth, increasing unit volume share from 11.3 percent to 12.4 percent.
