Sony Recalls 90,000 Laptop Batteries
More Recalls To Come
A long list of laptop manufactures that have issued battery recalls is being complied, and Sony is the latest to be added to that list. Sony batteries have been at the helm of all the recent recalls, including batteries recalled by Dell and Apple.
Sony, based in Tokyo, said it will offer replacement batteries for the approximately 90,000 battery packs sold with its Vaio models in Japan and China. The affected batteries bear the model names VGP-BPS2B and VGP-BPS3A. The VGP-BPS2B were sold in China while the latter model mentioned were sold in Vaio T-series laptops in Japan and in models sold overseas, Sony said.
The battery recall won't remain restricted to only two countries, the company said. Sony is finalizing details about another recall that will affect other customers in different countries. According to a source, the total Sony battery recall could reach up to 300,000 battery packs once the recall has gone worldwide. Sony didn't confirm of deny this report that was published in a newspaper.
The battery model VGP-BPS2B is used with some models of the Sony Vaio AR, FE, FS and SZ-series laptops. The battery model VGP-BPS3A is used in the Sony Vaio T-series, according to the Sony Web site.
Sony is the seventh company to recall laptop battery packs in the past few months. The common thread between all the recalls is they all include cells made at Sony Energy Tech in Japan. These cells are thought to contain metallic particles, which have been known to short circuit and cause a fire hazard.
Dell began the domino effect of laptop battery recalls back in August of this year, when the PC maker recalled 4.1 million batteries. Soon after Dell's recall, Apple joined the party recalling 1.8 million battery packs, followed closely by Panasonic and Toshiba recalls.
