Panasonic Joins List Of Notebook Battery Recalls
Doesn't Affect US Customers
Matsushita, or Panasonic as it's known by the brand name, joined the list of notebook battery recalls this week when the company recalled 6,000 notebook batteries sold in Japan. The Panasonic battery recall is minute when compared to the other battery recalls in the past few months.
In August, Dell recalled 4.1 million notebook batteries, followed closely by Sony when they recalled 1.8 million batteries for the iBook and PowerBook lines. In both of these cases the batteries were made by Sony.
Matsushita didn't name a specific manufacturer of the batteries in question, but said the batteries were neither manufactured by Sony of by Matsushita itself.
The company said the problem with the batteries is not with the cells, like in the recalls of other notebook makers. Matsushita said the problem lays with small springs that may come lose and come in contact with the battery, causing overheating.
Fortunately, the batteries were sold in a confined area and will only affect customers that bought their Matsushita notebook in Japan. The notebook batteries in question were made from April and May of 2005.
The company said the batteries should not have a problem if they aren't damaged in any way and that the batteries would only overheat if they sustained a strong impact. The company also said that no one has been injured from the batteries, nor has one caught fire.
