Panasonic Develops New Laptop Battery
Battery Said To Not Overheat
Amidst the laptop battery recalls over the past few months, Panasonic said it has developed a lithium-ion battery that, according to the company, won't overheat. Battery recalls were sparked when a short circuit occurred in laptop batteries, mainly Sony-made, causing the battery to overheat and become a fire hazard.
Panasonic said the new lithium-ion battery contains a heat-resistive insulator, which is next to an existing separator that insulates the anode and cathode. If the separator is damaged or punctured, the battery could over heat or cause a fire. This is what occurred in some batteries that spawned the laptop battery recalls.
The new battery, even if the separator is punctured and a short circuit occurs, won't cause the battery to overheat, Panasonic said. Panasonic said the insulator won't allow the battery to overheat.
Earlier this year many of the top laptop manufacturers recalled thousands, even millions of laptop batteries.
Of the recalls, Dell recalled 4.1 million batteries, Sony recalled 900,000 batteries and Toshiba recalled 340,000 laptop batteries, to name a few.
All the companies offer free replacement batteries. To check to see if your battery was recalled, please check the following links.
