LCD TVs To Dominate TV Market By 2009
Traditional TVs Still Out Sell Plasma
Liquid-crystal display (LCD) televisions will be the most popular type of TV in the world come 2009, according to a new analyst report. LCD TVs will make up 56 percent of all TVs shipped globally, as the new technology's rising sales overshadow traditional tube sets, iSuppli reported.
The rise in market share will be faster than expected due to increased demand and lower prices due to more efficient manufacturing of the screens, which are based on the same technology found in notebook screens.
Prices of LCD TVs should fall as the demand rises in the next five years, iSuppli said. In comparison to the first quarter of 2005, the first quarter of 2006 saw a spike in LCD TV shipments to 1.06 billion from 9.9 million.
The projected LCD TV shipment numbers from iSuppli indicate an increase of more than five times the LCD TV screen shipments in 2005. The shipments for LCD TVs this year alone will jump by 74 percent to 46.7 million units, iSuppli said, raising their previous estimate of 41.9 million from a few months ago.
Cathode Ray (CRT) sets made up 82 percent of TV shipments in 2005, but will see shipments fall dramatically to just 34 percent in 2010, iSuppli reported. However, CRT sets are currently still seeing a large market share, making up 76 percent of TV units in the first quarter of 2006, iSuppli said. LCD TVs made up a mere 17 percent of TVs shipped in the first quarter of 2006.
Meanwhile, sales of plasma and projection TVs will remain low. In 2009, projection TVs will account for about the same as the do now, sitting at 3 percent of the market. Plasma TVs, on the other hand, will see a raise to seven percent from three percent.
