LCD TV Panel Revenues Rise
Exceeds Monitor Panel Revenues For First Time
The first quarter of this year yielded a spike in worldwide shipments of large-area (ten inches or larger) TFT LCD modules, topping out at 44 percent year-over-year. The rise resulted in a 58 percent revenue growth to $12.9 billion, according to a DisplaySearch report.
Television panel revenue exceeded monitor panel revenue for the first time in the first quarter. Panel suppliers are expecting larger orders for the second quarter of 2006 and have increased their inventory to meet the demand, the DisplaySearch report revealed.
Notebook PC panel shipments didn't meet the expected output. Shipments fell 6 percent quarter-over-quarter. Projections had notebook PC panel shipments reaching 8 percent to 18.6 million units. Significant price erosion resulted in notebook panel revenues falling to 16 percent quarter-over-quarter, while rising 36 percent year-over-year, the report stated.
While notebook PC panels were down overall, the wide notebook panels continued to raise, a trend that the industry has shown recently. Overall, wide notebook panels have grasped a 62 percent share of all notebook panels shipped in the first quarter. The 15.4-inch panel now dominates notebook panels shipped, capturing a 36 percent share, slightly up from 30 percent, according to the report.
Of all the technologies, LCD TVs were the only modules to render quarter-over-quarter growth, rising 11 percent rather than the projected eight percent. The larger panel share rose with the demand for bigger LCD TVs. The 30-inch and larger share rose three percent, from 45 percent to 48 percent.
Regarding total output on an areal basis by a supplier, Samsung holds the top position. Samsung retained the lead with a 22 percent share, ahead of other suppliers in each major application. LG. Philips remained in position two, but suffered when its share fell below 20 percent on a 6 percent area decline, the report stated.
For the first time Taiwan suppliers jumped ahead of Korean suppliers on an area basis, earning 46 percent to 44 percent advantage. Taiwan took market share in notebook PCs, monitors and TVs, according to the report released in late May.
