Batteries Could Pose Fire Risk
This week, in association with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Dell announced a voluntary recall of approximately 4.1 million Dell-branded lithium-based batteries manufactured by Sony. Although rare, these batteries will over heat and cause a fire hazard, Dell said.
Laptop owners that are affected by this recall are given top priority if they use a special site that Dell set up to handle this recall. Dell laptop owners should visit http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com to determine if their particular battery is included in the recall.
The batteries were sold in the following Dell notebook computers: Dell LatitudeTM D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810; InspironTM 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705; and Dell PrecisionTM M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations; and XPSTM, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710, Dell said.
The batteries were also sold as replacement batteries. The battery identification number is on the back of all the batteries. The number is found on a white sticker. Dell owners that may be affected by this recall should have this number ready when you call Dell or visit the special battery recall site.
Dell sold these batteries or sent them to customers as replacement batteries from April 1, 2004 through July 18, 2006.
If you think you might have a defected battery, Dell advises you not to use the battery as a power source until you have confirmed that you are not affected by the recall. Use the power cord instead as your power source, Dell said.
