Asustek Lands Big Order From Dell
Shipments Of 14.1 Inch Notebook PCs To Begin In 2007
Asustek Computer Inc. has expanded its relationship with Dell Computers by winning a bid to supply Dell with 14.1 inch wide-screen notebook PCs, according to industry sources.
The order will be added to the existing order placed by Dell. Asustek, based in Taiwan, will commence shipping the new Dell order in the second quarter of 2007 with an estimated shipment total of 1.4 million units, according to the source.
The model that Asustek will make for Dell will use the Intel fourth generation Centrino notebook platform known as Santa Rosa. Asustek has declined comment on this report due to customer confidentiality.
Earlier this year, Digitimes.com reported that Asustek had landed only one order with Dell for a 17 inch notebook model.
Digitimes.com reports that Asustek may only account for less than 10 percent of Dell’s total contract owners with Taiwan-based suppliers in 2007, despite Dell increasing their existing order. On the other hand, Quanta’s shipments to Dell accounted for over 55 percent of the vendor’s notebook shipments, Digitimes.com reported.
Asustek is still a relatively new force as a notebook PC supplier in Taiwan, but is currently ranked 5th as a notebook PC supplier in Taiwan.
Asustek is currently enjoying raising sales of their own brand notebook PCs (ASUS) and MacBook notebooks it contract supplies to Apple Computer. The company also fills customized orders for Hewlett-Packard and Sony.
Earlier this year Asustek began expanding its notebook PC production abilities at its plants in China in Suzhou, Shanghai and Jiangsu earlier this year, sources said.
