ScreenTek is proud to provide you this glossary of common terms in the laptop LCD screen industry, and in the laptop notebook industry. Feel free to become more familiar with the terms we use throughout our site. If you notice any glaring omissions, we'd be glad to hear about those. Drop us a line at sales@screentekinc.com.
Parallel transmittance %
The degree to which beams of light are reflected from an object pass through a material within a predetermined small range of angles
(more Optics terms)
Passive matrix OLED
liquid crystal display mounted thereto, the area for mounting a logic circuit is reduced, the product is reduced in size, and further the reliability is improved.
(more Hardware terms)
Patterned spacers
were designed and fabricated to prevent the problems caused by residual monomers in photopolymerization-assisted manufacturing of liquid crystal (LC) devices.
(more terms)
Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA)
A type of TFT LCD screen which provides high contrast and brightness.
(more Hardware terms)
Pencil hardness
A test that uses a variety of pencils with varying hardness to determine the hardness of a film.
(more Hardware terms)
Pin photodiode
is a PN Junction or Pin structure. It is a type of photodetector capable of converting light into either current or voltage, depending upon the mode of operation.
(more Hardware terms)
Pixel
Spawned from combining the words picture and element (pix-el), a pixel is basically is the smallest addressable unit on a display screen or bitmapped image.
(more Image terms)
Pixel defects
there are one of two types: dead or stuck. A dead pixel is defined as a pixel or set of sub-pixels that has failed and is permanently in the off position. A stuck pixel is defined as a pixel or sub-pixel that has failed and is permanently in the on position.
(more Image terms)
Pixel pitch
The distance between a red, blue or green component and the next closest component, measured in mm.
(more Hardware terms)
Plasma display panel (PDP)
They are called "plasma" displays because the pixels rely on plasma cells, or what are in essence chambers more commonly known as fluorescent lamps. A panel typically has millions of tiny cells in compartmentalized space between two panels of glass.
(more Electronic terms)
Polarizer
A surfacing that covers an LCD panel which acts as a filter to help control the which direction light travels.
(more Surface terms)
Poly-Si TFT
as a channel material may be employed in panels of active matrix liquid crystal display devices (AMLCD) or active matrix organic light emitting display devices (AMOLED) due to their higher mobility
(more Hardware terms)
Power consumption
The amount of power that an electronic device consumes.
(more Hardware terms)
Privacy film
A film that is within an LCD screen that controls the position from where the display can be viewed.
(more Hardware terms)
Pull
An LCD screen which has been removed from a used laptop.
(more Quality terms)
QXGA
(2048 x 1536), 1.33x aspect ratio, Standard
(more Image terms)
Radioluminescent screen
comprising a substrate and a fluorescent layer provided thereon and consisting essentially of a binder and a radioluminescent phosphor dispersed therein. The binder comprises linear polyester resin or linear polyester resin crosslinked with a crosslinking agent. The screen exhibits improved physical properties.
(more Hardware terms)
Reflection
An occurrence of reflecting; the return of light or sound waves from a surface.
(more Optics terms)
Reflective
A viewing mode which uses ambient or other front lighting to provide the illumination for the display.
(more Optics terms)
Reflexive reflections
Occurs whenever the structure of the surface is such that light striking the surface is preferentially reflected back in the direction of the source.
(more Surface terms)
Refraction
The change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another caused by its change in speed.
(more Optics terms)
Refraction index
The ratio of the speed of radiation (as light) in one medium (as a vacuum) to that in another medium.
(more Optics terms)
Refurbished
A process which repairs damage to an item, or to make an old item appear new and clean.
(more Quality terms)
Repolarization
The act of applying a new polarizer to a screen. See polarizer
(more Surface terms)
Resistor-capacitor (RC) relaxation
oscillators are generally produced using operational voltage amplifiers or integrated circuits equipped with timers
(more terms)
Resolution
Refers to the amount of pixels that can be displayed on an LCD screen.
(more Image terms)
Response time
The amount of time it takes to respond to a given command or input.
(more Hardware terms)
Response time measurement (RTM)
enables you to measure the quality of users' network experience.
(more terms)
Retardation film
Improves contrast on STN (super twisted nematic) and TN (twisted nematic)cells and to provide for black and white and color on STN display cells.
