ScreenTek is proud to provide you this glossary of common terms in the laptop LCD screen industry, and in the laptop notebook industry. Feel free to become more familiar with the terms we use throughout our site. If you notice any glaring omissions, we'd be glad to hear about those. Drop us a line at sales@screentekinc.com.
DBEF
(Dual Brightness Enhancement Film) A 3M product that increases LCD screen brightness. The film recycles most of the light that is normally lost in the rear polarizer.

Dead pixel
An occurrence when the pixel of an LCD screen shorts and remains permanently open or closed. There are two occurrences which define a dead pixel: a "lit" pixel, which appears as a randomly placed white, red, blue and/or green dot on a dark background or a "missing" pixel which appears as a black dot on light-colored background. LCD makers and laptop manufacturers have limits to how many dead pixels are allowed on a screen before they'll accept it back for a refund or exchange. For examples of various dead pixel policies, see our Quality Standards page. One simple way of determining if you have a dead pixel on your screen is to try one of many available dead pixel tests found online.

Delta color filter arrangement
has three sub-pixels, two of which are disposed in the second row, and the other one sub-pixel is disposed in the first row and correspondent to the center of said second row to form the delta arrangement

Diffuse reflection
A reflection from a rough or matte surface which creates a beam of scattered light, with no directional dependence. In the image at right, the green lines represent the image and the light blue lines represent the reflected image.

Diffuser
Translucent material used for light diffusion placed between backlight lighting sources and the back side of an LCD.

Digital Light Processor (DLP)
DLP modulates light by either reflecting it into a light absorber or directing it through projection optics. Grayscale is achieved via pulse width modulation.

Double brightness enhancement film
a scratch resistance film used for liquid crystal displays, its major function is to collect the lights scattered by light guides through refraction and total internal reflection and converge the collected lights in a direction within on-axis ±35° so as to increase the brightness of LCDs

Double Super Twist Nematic (DSTN)
A type of LCD screen that uses less power and are less expensive to manufacture than thin-film transistor (TFT) screens. DSTN screens usually produce lower image quality and have slower response time than TFT displays.
(more Hardware terms)
Dual Select Diode (DSD) AMLCD
Each pixel consists of a differential circuit with two equal nonlinear resistors or TFDs (Thin Film Diodes)

Etch stopper
used in the production of a semiconductor device by a damascene method.

Excimer Laser Annealing (ELA)
The technique of using a pulsed excimer laser to crystallize amorphous silicon (a-Si) to polysilicon (p-Si) in the LTPS process.

Field Sequential Display
An LCD display architecture in which RGB field images are sequentially displayed so that the viewer sees a full-color frame.

Field-effect mobility
The field-effect mobility in an organic thin-film transistor is studied theoretically. From a percolation model of hopping between localized states and a transistor model an analytic expression for the field-effect mobility is obtained. The theory is applied to describe the experiments by Brown et al. [Synth. Met. 88, 37 (1997)] on solution-processed amorphous organic transistors, made from a polymer (polythienylene vinylene) and from a small molecule (pentacene).

Five mask
method used for manufacturing an active matrix liquid crystal displaying device having a plurality of thin film transistors
(more terms)
Frame rate
The number of frames or images that are projected or displayed per second.
(more Image terms)
Frequency
The measurement of the amount of times a repeated event takes place, per unit time.
