Chromebook is a web-optimized netbook. Not really a laptop, the Chromebook works through and stores everything in the cloud. Rumors regarding the Chromebook have been endless; today Google made an official announcement and launched the product.

Google partnered with Samsung and Acer to create the Chromebook. Neither the Acer nor the Samsung models vary all that much from one another. The main differences is the Acer version is slightly smaller at 2.96 lbs with an 11.6” display where as the Samsung version has a 12” display and weighs 3.26 lbs. The Acer Chromebook also features an HDMI port and HD audio support. Both Chromebooks offer 2 USB ports, 4-in-1 memory card slot, a full-size keyboard and an over-sized fully clickable trackpad.

Like a cell phone, the Google Chromebook is always connected, thanks to the 3G network. With a battery estimated to hold a charge from 6-8 hours, it’s basically cord-free during the day. The Chromebook updates automatically through the cloud and does not require manual and disruptive updates. The same goes for security precautions. It can be frustrating and annoying constantly updating a PC or laptop to stay current with virus protection, the Chromebook eliminates this with layered security that updates automatically as well.

Being that the majority of our computer activity is web-based these days, the Chromebook intends to be the simplified solution to web access that PCs and laptops complicate for school and work tasks. The Chromebook can be outfitted with numerous apps making it an even more productive gadget. All of your pictures, documents, music and more are in one place and accessible from anywhere without wires and additional hardware, all in under 10 seconds! Chromebook loads in 8 seconds, that’s got to be some sort of record.

The Chromebook will be available for monthly subscriptions, $28 per month for professionals and $20 for students. This fee includes warranty, updates and security. Amazon and Best Buy will begin selling Google Chromebooks June 15 in the US. Chromebooks will also be available in the U.K., France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Spain. Watch the video below for more on the Chromebook.
